Checking Out by Playing Sick

by martha on January 10, 2011

I could have blooooggggged alll niiiiiight....I feel a little bit like I was hit by a bus, but, at this point, I can’t be sure how much is real and how much is from treating myself as if I’ve been sick.  Technically, I don’t think my condition ever rose to the official threshold of “sick” – no fever, no collection of symptoms.  But, I suspected I might end up in bad shape and I decided to take preemptive, coddling action.

New Year’s morning my throat was killing me when I woke up.  It hurt to swallow and I had a feeling I might be getting sick. Since I’d had a totally party-free, in-bed-early New Year’s Eve, it was reasonable to think I might actually be ill and not suffering from a celebratory “flu.”

A few cups of coffee later (Is there any morning ailment that wonderful stuff won’t cure?) my throat felt better and I figured that I must have slept with my mouth open or something.  Regardless, I gargled with some salt water, took some Vitamin C, and hoped I’d recover.

For the rest of the week, each morning greeted me with some variation on the sore throat. Sometimes it was accompanied by congestion, so I’d pop some Claritin. Sometimes it was merely the sore throat, which was treated with more salt water and Vitamin C.  Regardless, the pain would dissipate as the day went on.

So, I decided that I would lay low over the weekend.  Rest. Sleep a lot. Read. Ignore the phone. And, even stay off the computer. (Crazy, I know.)

It was two days in the la-la land of  naps, hot tea, grapefruit, movies, and junk TV.  All of this in hopes of fighting off what may or may not be some viral infection.

Did it work?  It remains to be seen whether I wake up with a sore throat again tomorrow.

Did I enjoy the excuse to sleep in and check out? You bet I did!

Can I see where “behaving as if” I may be sick may have left me feeling a little sicker?  Sadly, yes.

So, tomorrow it’s back to normal. Though, I still think if I could have a laptop rigged up like that piano, I could get a lot done, even when embracing this just-in-case-I’m-sick state.
